Info

San Miguel is a small city in Mexico’s central highlands known for its Spanish architecture and arts scene. San Miguel is also known for its cultural events, having many festivals and parades throughout the year. The series of photos illustrates an event that marks the beginning of the Easter Celebration called the Semana Santa or Holy Week which is a full two weeks before Easter. A pilgrimage begins in a nearby village of Atotonilco where the much beloved statue: El Senor de la Columna (Jesus carrying his crucifixion cross) is carried at midnight to San Miguel. Fireworks, balloons, and the roads lined with oranges, plants and flowers are characteristics of how San Miguel welcomes these pilgrims as they arrive in the early morning and pass through the city. The procession ends with a mass at San Juan de Dios Church at 8AM. This easter pilgrimage has been carried out every year since 1812, making it a 200-year tradition.
